Seán Casey out as Maurogiovanni seeks “more appropriate Olympic experience” for Rowing Ireland

Rowing Ireland has let go of heavyweight coach Seán Casey, appointed under the former performance director, Morten Espersen. Antonio Maurogiovanni, who succeeded Espersen in the summer has chosen to terminate Casey with the full backing of the high-performance committee of Rowing Ireland.

Maurogiovanni told The Irish Times that Casey was a good coach but he hoped to recruit a new person with “more appropriate Olympic experience”. The other full-time coach in the Ireland system is Dominic Casey, who coaches lightweights.

Rowing Ireland was due to conduct trials this Saturday, December 23 at the National Rowing Centre in Cork. However, the event has been cancelled as an ambulance crew to cover safety could not be secured.
